Building a subscription business in games is one thing. Building a full commerce ecosystem around it is another. That's the gap SportsHero is closing with its newly announced strategic partnership with Xsolla, integrating global payments and distribution infrastructure into HeroPlay, its gaming and esports platform for Southeast Asia. From Subscriptions to a Full Gaming Universe Announced in September 2026, the agreement brings Xsolla's commerce, payments, and distribution infrastructure into HeroPlay, opening revenue channels beyond SportsHero's existing subscription and Direct Carrier Billing model. Through the partnership, SportsHero gains direct-to-consumer game webstores, in-game purchase capabilities, and access to Xsolla's pre-aggregated catalogs of game and digital content, moving HeroPlay closer to becoming a full gaming universe spanning subscriptions, vouchers, webstores, in-app purchases, and advertising. Chasing the Bigger Share of Player Spend The opportunity is sizable. The global games industry is worth roughly $205 billion across 3.6 billion players, according to Newzoo's Global Games Market Report 2026, with in-app purchases and advertising together making up about 80 percent of that spend, the two largest segments in the market. Until now, HeroPlay has drawn primarily on subscriptions and vouchers. This partnership positions it to capture a much wider slice of that spectrum, rather than leaving the largest part of the market untouched. Diversifying Beyond the Telco Network SportsHero's growth in Southeast Asia has relied heavily on Direct Carrier Billing through its telco partnerships. Xsolla's platform runs independently of those relationships, so SportsHero can now monetize players outside its carrier base entirely. Rather than concentrating acquisition in one channel, HeroPlay gains a second, parallel path to reach and monetize players through locally relevant payment methods and direct webshops that don't depend on a telco relationship in the first place. Infrastructure That Doesn't Need to Be Built From Scratch Xsolla brings over 21 years of commerce infrastructure to the table. The company operates as a merchant of record across more than 200 geographies, with access to over 1,000 payment methods and 130 currencies, and has already launched more than 700 direct-to-consumer webshops for developers worldwide. For SportsHero, that means inheriting established global infrastructure on day one rather than spending years assembling a commerce and payments stack internally.

"We're thrilled about this partnership with Xsolla," said Tom Lapping, CEO of SportsHero. "It's another step in building HeroPlay from a subscription gaming product into a broader gaming and commerce ecosystem. Xsolla brings more content, direct-to-consumer webshops and global payment options into HeroPlay, while reaching gamers beyond our existing telco networks."
Chris Roution, VP of Strategic Partnerships at Xsolla, framed the deal in terms of regional momentum: "Southeast Asia is one of the fastest-growing gaming regions in the world, and SportsHero has built real distribution strength through its telco relationships and the HeroPlay platform. This partnership brings our commerce and payments infrastructure into that ecosystem, so players can access webshops, in-game currency, and digital goods as HeroPlay grows into a full gaming commerce destination."

What It Means Going Forward There's no minimum spend or recurring cost tied to the agreement; SportsHero earns a commission or fee on products sold, with revenue contingent on actual sales through the HeroPlay platform. That structure keeps the partnership tied directly to outcomes: as HeroPlay's commerce layer grows, so does the return for both companies. For an industry where in-app purchases and advertising already dominate global spend, HeroPlay's move to plug into that infrastructure, rather than build it alone, is a pragmatic bet on where the next phase of growth in Southeast Asian gaming is headed.
