Why "Gaming for good" is now a business imperative

The games industry is one of the world's most powerful cultural and economic forces and increasingly, its infrastructure companies are being called on to prove it. That's the central argument Berkley Egenes, Chief Marketing & Growth Officer at Xsolla, made on a recent episode of the Good Game Club podcast. Egenes believes gaming companies should contribute social and cultural value, not just commercial growth, and that the two are far from mutually exclusive.

Making Gaming Accessible to Everyone

One of Xsolla's most tangible commitments to this vision is its partnership with UK accessibility charity SpecialEffect and Stevenage FC. Through merchandise sales and fundraising, the initiative helps fund adaptive gaming equipment for disabled players, removing barriers that prevent many people from participating in gaming communities. xsolla-blog-atlantic-canada-featured-image-02-2112x1146.webp "We believe that everybody's a gamer," Egenes says. "No matter where you are, what your journey is, what your abilities are, you should have the opportunity to play."

Investing in the Next Generation of Developers

Access isn't just a hardware problem; it's an opportunity problem. Earlier this year, Xsolla funded attendance for 45 independent studios from around the world at the GDC Festival of Gaming in San Francisco, selected from more than 500 applicants. The programme gave smaller developers a rare shot at connecting with investors, publishers, and the global games community. "They otherwise would not have had the opportunity to be there," Egenes notes, a simple observation that underscores how much talent remains locked out of the industry's biggest rooms. xsolla-blog-good-game-club-featured-imge-01-2112x1146.webp

Gaming's Influence Extends Far Beyond Entertainment

Egenes also makes a broader case: gaming's economic and cultural impact is still being underestimated outside the sector. He points to emerging markets in Southeast Asia and Africa as the next frontiers for growth, and highlights gaming's crossover into fintech, film, music, and design. "There's so much power and positivity in our industry," he says. "Things that we're doing in gaming are impacting fintech, movie creation, music creation, development, and design."
