For Mobile Game Developers - Everything is set to Change

June 3, 2022

Hang on tight, because the mobile gaming landscape continues to be a wild ride with massive changes on the horizon. Last month, a United States District Court in California issued an order that denies Apple’s motion to delay the injunction resulting from the Epic Games vs. Apple Inc. lawsuit.  That injunction, which is currently set to go into effect on December 9, states that Apple must allow game developers to provide access to third-party payment options by communicating with customers through points of contact obtained voluntarily through account registration within the app. What is particularly striking is the language used by the court to clarify the issue. While Apple wants in-app purchases to remain available only through the App Store, this court disagrees and sides with the users. “The fact remains: it should be their choice. Consumer information, transparency, and consumer choice is in the interest of the public.“ So what does this mean for you as a mobile game developer? It means that all signs continue to indicate that December 9, 2021, will represent a sea change in potential revenue channels and opportunities. As before, you can continue to roll out your own web shop for your mobile game, selling in-app items, virtual currency, and even subscriptions… without Apple taking 30% of that revenue.  Xsolla has anticipated this change for some time, and we’re here to help. With Xsolla Web Shop for Mobile Games solution, mobile game developers can quickly and easily establish their own web shop, import their item catalog via API, unlock more revenue, and reach new players in new geographies around the world. And that’s just for starters, as this solution offers you multiple features and benefits to accelerate your growth. Check out our blog from September 16 that details the ways you can grow your mobile game’s revenue.  If you’ve been waiting on the sidelines for the dust to clear, now is the time for action. In fact, you can begin earning more revenue and engaging with new users right now, as Apple has already quietly removed the terms limiting this possibility from their App Store Review Guidelines.
