This year’s theme, “Designing for Tomorrow,” set the stage for a dialogue around how games and immersive media can be harnessed to build a better world, with a focus on equity and inclusion in game development. The festival featured thought-provoking panels, workshops, awards, and exhibitions that explored the intersection of games with social issues and sustainable innovation. As part of the event, Chris Hewish, Xsolla’s President, participated in a dynamic speaking session that spotlighted the transformative role of new global markets in shaping the future of the gaming industry.
Spotlight: How emerging markets have become industry leaders
On Thursday, June 26, Chris Hewish joined industry leaders for a panel discussion exploring how regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and Türkiye are no longer just “emerging.” They are taking the lead with vibrant ecosystems and community-powered creativity. This panel was moderated by Susanna Pollack, President of Games for Change, and featured Güven Çatak, Founder and Director of the Bahcesehir University Game Lab in Türkiye, and Hugo Obi, CEO of Maliyo Games in Kenya. The conversation spotlighted how these regions are evolving into sustainable creative hubs, driven by cultural authenticity, local storytelling, and innovative grassroots initiatives. The session demonstrated the power of intentional development, from Hugo Obi’s efforts to shape Africa’s gaming identity through mobile-first experiences to Güven Çatak’s commitment to fostering talent through university programs. Chris Hewish shared Xsolla’s global perspective, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure, access to funding, and mentorship in helping creative communities flourish. Chris spoke to the regions' emerging leadership, highlighting how their unique perspectives and local innovation are reshaping the future of game development.
